Locust Grove, Buckingham Co., Virginia  – Home of John Flood

Locust Grove BuckinghamLocust Grove, which is located one mile east of Sprouses Corner just off Route 60, is an eight room frame house with a slate roof. The original house, having a rock walled basement, was constructed of hewn logs and wooden pegs. Later generations, at two different times, added wings to the house, each wing having a staircase, wide pine floors and a fireplace in each room, the fireplace in the original part having a mantel made by Indians.

LocustGrove-JohnFloodThe original owner of the house was Captain John Flood of the British Navy, who removed to Virginia and fought in the French and Indian War. His grandson, Daniel Flood, who served in the War of 1812 and was a son of Noah Flood, who served in the American Army during the Revolutionary War, was the next owner. Sarah Agnes Flood, daughter of Daniel Flood, who married James David Anderson on December 3,1840, became the owner of Locust Grove and at their death, James Lewis Anderson, their son, who was Treasurer of Buckingham County for 27 years, bought out the heirs and lived there with his family. Locust Grove has been owned for seven generations by descendants of John Flood, the present owner and occupant of the house being the grandson of James Lewis Anderson, David M. Word, III.
